Jeffrey’s Story
Before moving to Detroit from Kentucky, Jeff’s family was left homeless after a house fire. While other family members were able to find new living arrangements, Jeff found, as a male, he had limited options available in that state. So Jeff came to Detroit, hoping some of his family here might be able to help. Unfortunately, little if any support came his way.
Jeff was discouraged, and he said most people do not realize how easy it is to become homeless and unemployed. Eventually he was able to get help with meals from Saint Peter and Paul Church in Detroit. There he learned about the Pope Francis Center where he was able to find shelter, and also discovered Better Way Detroit (BWD). He signed up for the program.
Jeff said he enjoyed his experience with BWD, including making some spending money, which helped him regain some dignity. With BWD’s support, he was able to begin a journeyman program to work in building maintenance - a field in which he already has some experience. Jeff’s hopes are high to obtain full time employment and become self-sufficient once again.
