The Story of Teshia
There was a time in her life when Teshia did not have much hope of achieving her dreams. And then she met the people at Better Way Detroit.
When she got involved in the program, Teshia was living at a hotel and struggling to afford the cost. “Someone told me about Better Way, to see if they could help me. Sure enough, they reached out to me and helped me make my payment. I am really grateful to have met them.”
“They guided me through a lot since I’ve been with them. They have a lot of resources. It’s an opportunity to help you get on your feet.”
Teshia’s time with Better Way Detroit involved work such as boxing food for those in need and sorting clothing donations. The program places participants with partner organizations such as the Capuchin Services Center, Focus Hope or St. Vincent de Paul.
Teshia remembers starting the workday with a group meeting “to see how everyone was doing.”
“They (Better Way) come and pick you up,” she said. “They show you everything. And it’s very enjoyable and even relaxing. You can even listen to music while you are working.”
She said that during lunch breaks, participants talk about what everyone is learning.
“I learned to be motivated,” she said. “They help you build confidence and develop skills. To always be on time. To get your work done. To communicate better. To reach your goals. They guided me a lot.”
Teshia is excited about her future. She hopes to start her own housekeeping business someday, both residential and commercial. “I love to clean,” she said.
Teshia would encourage people to participate in the Better Way Detroit program. “They are there to help people who need it,” she said. “They will help you with whatever you need. If I had it to do over, I would do it again. There is no disrespect. It is an environment anyone can work in, teenagers and youth. Mothers with children. They are there to listen. Whatever it is. It’s awesome. It’s perfect. You will love it.”
