The Program

  • Better Way Detroit rotates our efforts between various shelters within Detroit. If your shelter is selected, your manager will alert you to an opportunity to work with us for pay at a community outreach center near your shelter. You will complete some paperwork, then we will transport you to and from the shelter to your worksite, providing a mid-day meal and snacks throughout the day. You are paid at the end of each day in cash. We handle all state and federal taxes for you.

  • You will work on-site three days a week for four weeks. The work is not strenuous, such as sorting, hanging, and tagging clothes or packing boxes with clothes and toys. The overall environment is welcoming and up-lifting

  • During your time on-site, Better Way Detroit staff will engage you to better understand your needs and personal vision. You will also participate in a brief daily ministry with your co-workers, typically after lunch. Over the course of your work month, we’ll also help you prepare for permanent employment, such a helping you prepare a resume, and by providing guidance on how best to interview with your potential employer.

  • While you are working on site and we get to know you, we are working to find you a permanent job at which we feel you’ll succeed after your four weeks are concluded. We placed dozens on men and women in jobs last year! But we don’t just say good luck and good bye after you leave. We assign a personal mentor to assist you through the first several months of your job, helping you to settle in and succeed. And then after, we are still there for you … just a phone call away.

“You can dream. It’s OK to dream … and this is a great way to start”

We’re here for you!

  • Employment

You’ll work with us for pay for four weeks, during which time we’ll get to know you so we can find and place you in permanent employment where we believe you will succeed.

  • Meals

While working with us you will enjoy a free lunch and snacks throughout the day. Oh, and there is always music to enjoy!

  • Housing

Better Way Detroit does not provide housing assistance, but we are closely connected to the local organizations that do and can assist you with making the right connections.

  • Childcare

Better Way Detroit does not provide childcare, but if you do have a family, we’ll work with you and your shelter to try to arrange a way for you to participate in our program.

  • Transportation

We provide transportation by our own stretch van to and from your shelter and the work site. We’ll also provide Uber service should you have a personal emergency during the day and need to return to the shelter.

  • Health Services

Better Way Detroit is proactively seeking health care services for our participants, such as a special program offered through Wayne State University we hope to launch this year. This is an area of focus which we intend to grow.
