Real People. Real Change.
From shelters to steady work, these stories show how compassion and opportunity come together through Better Way Detroit’s day work and mentorship programs.
The Story of Amina
When she first got involved with the Better Way Detroit, Amina described herself as a “hot head.” She had gotten into trouble at the shelter where she was living. “I was really angry,” she said. But one of the Better Way program mentors became like a “second mother” to her. “I call her my Christian mom,” said Amina. “She came into my life at a rough time.”
The Story of Jaden
After living in Miami, Florida for five years, Jaden returned to his hometown of Detroit. Initially he came back intending only to visit. Then he got involved in Better Way Detroit, and he decided to stay.
“You know when you have your mind made up and then you have to go a different way?” he said. “(Better Way) helped to point me in the right direction.”
The Story of Brandy
Brandy admits she didn’t know what to expect when she was recommended to Better Way. The single mother of a special needs 8-year-old daughter, she had a background in call center customer service, but was having a difficult time finding a job with hours that would allow her to be home with her daughter after school.
The Story of Breyana
Breyana credits Better Way Detroit and our Operations Manager, Quiane Bates, for supporting her during a difficult time. “With all my life challenges that I was facing…it was so hard figuring things out,” she said.
The Story of Londyn
One of the ways Better Way Detroit serves people is by helping them complete their education. “Many of our participants are younger and not always ready to go directly into the workforce,” said Fr. Marko Djonovic, founder of Better Way Detroit.
The Story of Marc
“I would’ve been DEAD if I didn’t meet you and get this job.” These are the recent words of a local homeless man that you helped through your generous support of Better Way Detroit. I will call him Marc.
