The Story of Nora

One of the main purposes for Better Way is in its name. It is to help those who have come to feel desperate and hopeless find a way to a better future.

Before discovering Better Way, Nora had come to a point in her life where all she saw was darkness. She says she made bad choices. There were enough bad choices that her world started to unravel and she lost her home. With nowhere to live, and no income, she and two of her children stayed in a homeless shelter. She says she not only did not have a home or a job, but she also had lost the confidence to make it better for herself and her family.

She found out about Better Way’s programs while in the shelter. She began work at a St. Vincent de Paul thrift store. She said it was an invaluable experience where she not only bonded with other women there but also learned how to resolve disagreements and discord. The fellowship she experienced was a spiritual uplifting, she says.

Although it took a better part of a year -- with many lows and highs -- the program helped get Nora and her children into a house very much like the one in which she grew up as a child. The house is not perfect, she says, “but it is perfect for me.”

Nora says every day she feels blessed to be” out of the wilderness”. She has regained her confidence and has a new-found sense of her capabilities. She says finding Better Way was a life-changing and spiritual experience. “Today, I stand by love, care and compassion.”
